Pain at the Back of the Mouth
Aching behind your last molar can be hard to pinpoint. It may come from a wisdom tooth, the tooth next to it, or the gum around them, so we examine the whole area.
Wisdom teeth removal in Whittier, CA, at Atlantic Dental & Orthodontics is handled by our own doctors, Dr. Aaron Paz and Dr. Alfred Tamir, in our office, with no referrals to outside specialists.
If pain or swelling at the back of your mouth is wearing you down, call us. If we determine the tooth needs to come out, we can often extract it the same day.

Many offices send wisdom teeth to a separate surgeon, which means another consultation and another wait. Here, our own doctors handle emergencies, including oral surgery and wisdom teeth, in-house and same day when possible.
Surgical dentistry has been part of our practice since we opened in 2003, and our doctors trained at New York University’s dental school.

Wisdom teeth can cause significant discomfort when they become impacted, inflamed, infected, or unable to come in properly. These are the symptoms we hear about most.
Aching behind your last molar can be hard to pinpoint. It may come from a wisdom tooth, the tooth next to it, or the gum around them, so we examine the whole area.
It can be difficult to clean around a tooth that has only partly come in. Gum tissue over or around it can become tender, swollen, or inflamed.
Stiffness or difficulty opening your mouth wide, along with pain at the back, can be a sign that a wisdom tooth needs prompt attention.
Pain when you bite down on your back teeth is worth an exam. It helps to know whether the wisdom tooth or a neighboring molar is the source.
A wisdom tooth may stay partly beneath the gum or be unable to emerge normally. We check its position and discuss whether monitoring or removal makes sense.
We also check the tooth in front of your wisdom tooth. Its condition matters when deciding how to address pain or other changes at the back of your mouth.
Important: Facial or neck swelling accompanied by difficulty breathing or swallowing requires immediate emergency medical care. Do not wait for a dental appointment.
Wisdom teeth do not all develop the same way, so your exam and images guide the plan.
We look at the wisdom tooth, the gum tissue around it, the neighboring molar, and your symptoms.
Images show how the tooth is positioned and how its roots sit. CBCT imaging is available when a more detailed view is helpful.
We explain whether the tooth should come out now or can be watched. If it needs to come out, we can often extract it the same day.
Dr. Paz or Dr. Tamir numbs the area and removes the tooth in our office, then goes over your aftercare before you head home.
Wisdom tooth pain or swelling?
Call us to describe your symptoms. If the tooth needs to come out, we can often extract it the same day.
Every wisdom tooth is different, so your recovery instructions are written around your procedure and your health. Your dentist goes over them before you leave, and our team is a phone call away while you heal.

What happens next depends on the exam. We explain how the tooth is positioned, what may be causing your symptoms, and which option fits your needs.
New or worsening pain and swelling deserve a prompt call. We can typically see emergency patients the same day, find the source of the problem, and discuss the next step.
A wisdom tooth is one of several teeth that may need to come out. Learn how we decide whether any damaged or infected tooth can be saved before recommending removal.
If pain at the back of your mouth turns out to come from an infected molar rather than the wisdom tooth, root canal treatment may let you keep that tooth.

Tell us when you call. Your dentist will explain every step before starting, numb the area first, and answer your questions about the procedure and recovery.
Recovery depends on how the tooth was positioned and how it was removed. Expect some tenderness and swelling at first. Rest, cold compresses on the outside of the cheek, and soft foods usually help, and your dentist will tell you what to watch for.
The cost varies with the care you need and your insurance benefits. After an evaluation, we explain the plan, verify your PPO coverage, and discuss payment options such as CareCredit and Cherry.
