How We Decide on Your Filling

A filling is a judgment call: how much decay to remove, and whether what’s left can handle chewing.

Our dentists treat patients of all ages and handle cosmetic dentistry too, so how the repaired tooth looks matters as much as how it bites. We’ve cared for Whittier patients since 2003.

When a cavity turns out deeper than it looked and decay reaches the nerve, our endodontic dentist, who has treated more than 5,000 root canal cases, can provide root canal treatment in the same office.

Signs You May Need a Dental Filling

A cavity doesn’t always announce itself. These are the most common reasons patients come in.

A Twinge With Cold Drinks or Sweets

Sharp sensitivity that fades quickly can mean decay has worn through the enamel. Once the decay is removed and the tooth is filled, that twinge usually stops.

A Dark Spot, Rough Edge, or Small Hole

Something you can see in the mirror or feel with your tongue is worth checking. Not every dark spot is a cavity, so we look before recommending anything.

Floss That Catches in One Spot

If floss shreds or snags in the same place, there may be a cavity or a worn filling edge between two teeth, where you can’t see it.

An Old Filling That’s Cracked or Worn

Old silver fillings can crack over time and let bacteria leak in underneath, causing a new cavity under the filling.

A Lost or Broken Filling

If a filling falls out or cracks, the tooth underneath is exposed. Call us instead of waiting for your next checkup.

No Symptoms at All

Many cavities don’t hurt until they’re deep. A cavity found at a checkup is usually a smaller fix than one found because of pain.

Tooth-Colored Fillings That Blend In

Tooth-colored fillings are made of composite resin, a mixture of microscopic ceramic and glass particles in a resin that can be bonded to teeth. It comes in a wide range of shades and can be sculpted to match the shape and color of your tooth.

Because the resin is bonded to the tooth, it forms a seal that reduces the chance of leakage, a common problem with older silver fillings.

Replacing Old Silver Fillings

Old silver fillings can crack over time and let bacteria leak in, causing a new cavity under the filling. Left alone, that decay can lead to the need for a root canal and a crown.

We can replace an old silver filling with a tooth-colored composite filling. Larger silver fillings may be better replaced with a porcelain onlay, a type of partial crown. With an intraoral camera, we can show you the small, hidden cracks in your silver fillings, and you can ask for a complimentary professional consultation to have them checked.

What Happens During a Filling

  1. 1

    See the cavity

An intraoral camera puts a close-up of the tooth on screen, and X-rays help us find decay between teeth.

  2. 2

    Numb and clean out

The tooth is numbed, then the decay or old filling is removed.

  3. 3

    Shade and sculpt

Tooth-colored composite is matched to your tooth, bonded in place, and shaped to fit your bite.

  4. 4

    Check your bite

We make sure the filling feels right when you bite down and polish it smooth.

When a Filling Isn’t Enough: Tooth Repairs Near You

Some cavities are too large or too deep for a filling alone. Here’s what we weigh against one.

Root Canal Treatment

If decay has reached the nerve inside the tooth, a filling would only seal the problem in. Dr. Samir Kamrani, who focuses on root canal treatment, can clean out the infected tissue so the tooth can be sealed and restored.

Dental Crowns

When a cavity takes up a big part of the tooth, or an old filling is so large there’s little natural tooth left, a crown or porcelain onlay protects what remains. If enough healthy tooth remains, a filling is the simpler fix.

Emergency Dentist

Lost a filling or broke a tooth? Emergency patients can typically be seen the same day. Call (562) 696-5544 and chew on the other side until we see you.

Dental Filling Questions From Whittier Patients

Can old silver fillings be replaced with tooth-colored fillings?

Yes, in many cases. We examine the filling and the tooth around it. A silver filling can be replaced with a tooth-colored composite filling, and larger silver fillings may be replaced with a porcelain onlay. With an intraoral camera, we can show you any small hidden cracks.

Are tooth-colored fillings strong enough for back teeth?

Composite resin is a mixture of fine ceramic and glass particles in a resin that is bonded to the tooth. For most cavities it works well. If the cavity is too large for a filling, we’ll tell you and discuss a crown or onlay instead.

I lost a filling. Can I be seen today in Whittier?

Usually, yes. Emergency patients can typically be seen the same day. Call (562) 696-5544 and avoid chewing on that side until we see you.

Can I have a cavity if my tooth doesn’t hurt?

Yes, and it’s common. Early decay often causes no pain at all. A checkup can catch it while a small filling is still enough.

How much does a dental filling cost in Whittier?

Your PPO plan makes the biggest difference, along with the size of the cavity and how many teeth need work. We confirm your coverage before treatment, so you know your share upfront. Any balance can go on CareCredit, Cherry, or a monthly plan.

Checking Your Fillings on Greenleaf Avenue

A filling placed years ago can wear at the edges and let decay start underneath. At your exam, we take a close look at older fillings, even when nothing hurts, and show you anything worn or cracked on screen.
