Dental Implants Are Quick to Place
When we do a single implant, we have all the natural teeth and a bite. We either have to graft the area or, once we graft the area, we create a sufficient amount of bone. Then we place the implant and the teeth, which fit in with the current occlusion that the patient has.
This is a simple process. It takes maybe 15-20 minutes to place an implant and another half hour to 45 minutes to restore the tooth. The patient has minimal chair time.
Full Mouth Dental Implants Take More Time
When you’re missing multiple teeth, your jaw becomes brittle and collapses.
When we go to full mouth rehabilitation, we first have to extract all the teeth to remove all the infected tissue, infected root tips, and infected tissue around the bone, and clean up everything. We graft the area and then come up with bone in the empty jaw so we can place all the implants. That’s going to be the base of what we are trying to accomplish. The implant is just the base, the pillars where we have to build the whole structure on top of.
The second step is building a structure on those pillars, similar to how you put the caissons first in a building and then put the building on top of it. We have to make sure that the occlusion is perfect, and the distance between the upper jaw and the lower jaw is correct.
If the jaws used to be closed at a certain angulation, height, and distance between the upper and lower jaw, and all of a sudden we increase that space, then everything is going to collapse. Nothing is going to work. The patient is going to come back with a lot of jaw problems, and the implants may even fail. When we’re doing a single implant, we don’t have to worry about that.
Full Mouth Dental Implants Cost is Justified
The amount of chair time for a single dental implant is around an hour. For full mouth rehabilitation, it’s several.
The reason why a single implant is not as costly or even six implants in the patient’s jaw, where everything else exists, is that it’s going to be six implants times the amount we charge per implant. But when we go to full mouth rehabilitation, we have to rebuild the patient’s occlusion and the dimensions all from scratch. That’s a very complex process.
It’s just like getting a website and fixing a corner of it. That’s not that difficult, but now what if you have an entire page that’s broken. Now you have to go back and build the page from scratch. You have to develop the concept, design it, and then implement it. The same exact thing happens in dentistry. The cost exponentially goes up just because of the amount of time you have to spend on this patient. Right, so full mouth dental implants cost is exponentially higher than just one single implant.
Again, two hours from start to finish for a single implant, while a full mouth reconstruction requires about 6 or 7 hours just for the surgery date, followed by multiple visits, multiple post-ops, and a final process. There’s a lot of calculation on our end. So there you go, that’s the reason why it’s more expensive.
